The reproduction panoramic view of Butler, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1896. Butler was organized in 1804 along the Connoquenessing Creek as North Butler and South Butler. In 1854 the separate areas formed one township. The productive farming community was subsequently found to be located above a major coal vein. The town was known in its early years for their fine tannery, hat making and distilled beverages.

The map shows Butler just after the new courthouse was completed, as a fire destroyed the old one in 1883. Butler was served by a branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Diamond Jim Brady later started the manufacturing firm of Standard Steel Car Company in Butler producing railcars.

The map from 1896 includes Butler��s labeled streets, bridges, buildings and railroad lines.
