Description

View of Jeannette, Westmoreland County, P.A., 1897 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic print of Jeannette, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. The history of Jeannette is bonded to the early glass making industry. The town was named after industrialist H. Sellers McKees wife. McKee and other industrialists purchased the land that had been fertile farmlands and development began. New factories were powered by coal beds situated just two miles away. Natural gas lines from the nearby coal beds enabled manufactures to produce glass economically.

The town was plotted in 1888. Many came to work in the numerous glass factories that emerged. The significant number of glass making companies in the area earned the communitys nickname "Glass Town". Jeannette was incorporated as a borough in 1889.

The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad lines.
