Description

Mannington, West Virginia 1897. Drawn by T. M. Fowler.

The reproduction aero-view map of Mannington, West Virginia was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. Mannington was established along the B. & O. Railroad in the 1850's on land belonging to George H. J. Koon and James Furbee. Many of their descendents became leading citizens of the community as the town prospered with business and industry. Manufacture of leather was a prominent early trade in Mannington and at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia the towns sole leather received great praise. The area afforded abundant farms and orchards and ample grazing for livestock. High quality oil had been discovered in West Virginia and Mannington was enjoying the profits of its extraction in 1897 as is shown by the many oil derricks shown throughout the community.

The map from 1897 includes labeled streets, buildings, bridges, oil derricks and railroad line.
