Description

View of Laconia, Belknap County, N.H., 1883 / drawn & published by Poole & Norris.

This bird’s-eye view print of Laconia, New Hampshire was drawn and published by A. F. Poole & G. E. Norris, Beck & Pauli Lith. in 1883. Laconia was settled near Lake Winnipesaukee in the 1700's. Lumber and grist mills were established in, what was then known as Meredith Bridge, beginning in the 1760's. A log-bridge over the Winnipesaukee River at that location was built in 1764 and replaced in 1810.

By the mid-1800's, Laconia was a busy manufacturing dry-town, possessing three cotton mills, a woolen mill, a grist mill and saw mills. The Granite Hosiery Mills were established in 1847 by John W. Busiel. The large brick mills manufactured men’s, women’s and children’s hose. White Mountain Mills, with Lewis F. Busiel as proprietor, began operations in 1853 in the production of hosiery yarn. Gilford Hosiery Company began operations in 1864 with Hon. John C. Moulton as treasurer. Joseph P. Pitman established the Pitman Hosiery Manufacturing Company in 1875.

Telephone service began in 1881, and by 1883 a successful horse-drawn railroad began operating, with service between the Willard Hotel in Laconia and the steamboat landing at Lake Village.

Weirs, located within Laconia at the outlet of Lake Winnipesaukee, was a popular summer resort area during the 1800's, containing a number of luxurious hotels. The steamer “Lady of the Lake” made regular runs between Weirs, Centre Harbor and other places along the lake.

The Laconia and Lake Village Water Works Company was organized in 1883. That same year the sash, door and blind factory owned by Gardner Cook & Son was destroyed by fire.

The map includes labeled roads, buildings, bridges, waterways and railroad route.
