Description

View of Tilton, Belknap County, N.H., 1884 / drawn & published by H. Wellge.

This bird’s-eye view print of Tilton, New Hampshire was drawn and published by Henry Wellge, Norris & Wellge Co. in 1884. Tilton was settled in the 1700's at the fork of the Winnipesaukee and Pemigewasset rivers as Crotchtown.

When a bridge was built across the Winnipesaukee River at that point in 1763 the town became known as Sanbornton Bridge. Sanbornton Bridge split from Sanbornton to become the town of Tilton in 1869; named after early settler Nathaniel Tilton.

Tilton’s grandson, Charles E. Tilton owned the major textile mills that were established here. Charles Tilton was a popular contributor of the town in the 1800's. Tilton School was founded here in 1845 as New Hampshire Conference Seminary. The institution, training young men for work in the Methodist church, added a female college in 1852.

The view includes labeled roads, buildings, bridges, waterways and railroad routes. Reference names are indistinct in some cases.
