This panoramic print of Marion, Iowa was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Merchants Lithographing Co. in 1868. Marian was founded in the late 1830s after the region recovered from the Black Hawk War. Marian was designated as county seat of the newly established Linn County. The community maintained timber and agricultural interests in its early years. Marian was incorporated in 1865.

In 1868 mayor Thomas Corbett and the citizens of Marian welcomed the addition of a new school building. The three-story brick structure filled the entirety of Block 33, between 1st and 2nd Sts. Its eight rooms contained all of the latest modern furnishings and an excellent library with modern philosophical equipment.

The map published in 1868 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route. There are featured inset illustrations of the Court House and Public School.
