View of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, M.N., 1885 / drawn & published by W. V. Herancourt.

This bird’s-eye view print of Minneapolis, Minnesota was drawn and published by W. V. Herancourt in 1885. Minneapolis and its original twin city Saint Anthony were established across the Mississippi River from one another.

Saint Anthony was founded in the 1840's on the east banks as the first saw mill was built there. A high waterfall at that location made an excellent power source.

Minneapolis emerged in the 1850's on the west side of the river and a suspension bridge was built between the towns in 1855. Railroad service between Minneapolis and Chicago was added in the 1860's.

Late in the 1860's, the expansion of mills around the valued Saint Anthony Falls nearly eroded the falls away. A major government funded project to reinforce the falls was underway for years restoring the Mississippi water power source. Saint Anthony merged with Minneapolis during that time and Minneapolis boomed as industries of all sorts began new operations.

The illustration includes streets, buildings, bridges and railroad routes.
