Description

Newark, N.J., Harrison-Kearney 1895. By T. J. S. Landis.

Reproduction view of the City of Newark, New Jersey drawn and published by T. J. Sheperd Landis in 1895. Newark was originally founded along the Passaic River in 1666 by Puritans from the New Haven Colony. The farming and light industrial community was transformed in the early 1800's with the completion of the Morris Canal. The innovative canal ran from Phillipsburg to Newark, altering the landscape and enabling the transportation of coal and other raw materials from the Lehigh Valley to New Jersey's growing industrial needs. Newark was the canal's terminus on the Passaic River. From here materials could be easily be forwarded across Kearny Point and through Jersey City to the Hudson River. Portions of this canal system were later dismantled to allow for the coming railroads. Nearby, Harrison was established as a township in 1840 honoring the newly elected president. Later, Kearny formed from part of Harrison and is now referred to as East Newark. The valuable Schuyler Copper Mines and the Edison Lamp Works were located in Harrison.

The map from 1895 shows clearly labeled streets and railroad routes.
