Description

Hackensack, New Jersey / O.H. Bailey & Co., lith. & pub.

This reproduction panoramic map of Hackensack, New Jersey was published by O. H. Bailey & Co. in 1896.

The Leni Lenape Tribe of Algonquin Indians lived and worked in the area that became Hackensack until the Dutch settled in the 1630's.

In November of 1776, George Washington and his troops headquartered in Hackensack and camped on the grounds of the First Dutch Reformed Church while retreating from Fort Lee. Later, Washington, along with French commander Lafayette returned to Hackensack to attend the funeral of Brigadier General Enoch Poor. Poor, a ship builder and merchant from New Hampshire, had ridden out a harsh winter at Valley Forge, led maneuvers during the Battle of Monmouth and raised victory at Newton. It was told that he had been felled by a dueler's bullet near Hackensack and died two days later. Of Enoch Poor, Washington wrote "He was an officer of distinguished merit, one who as a citizen and soldier had every claim to the esteem and regard of his country". Poor was buried at the First Reformed Church and a statue and monument were added later.

The view of Hackensack shows buildings, bridges, railroad route and clearly labeled streets.
