This unusually smart view of Ashland, New Hampshire was drawn and published by Poole & Norris, Beck & Pauli Lith. in 1883. Ashland was incorporated as a separate township from Holderness in 1868. Ashland is situated along the Squam River as it flows from Squam Lake toward the Pemigewasset River.
During the 1800's, several mills operated along the river, producing a number of different woolen, wood and paper products. The Squam Lake Woolen Mill was built in 1840 by James Briggs & Brothers. By the 1880's its 1,500 spindles were manufacturing 150,000 yards of flannels annually. A successful straw-board mill and a peg factory were converted to begin manufacturing leather-board in the 1860's. J. F. Draper & Company began operations in 1880 employing 200 in the manufacture of gloves. The paper mill operated by Charles T. Wilder & Company was a large producer of Manila wrapping paper.
The Ashland Mills were converted by Carter & Rogers in 1883, from paper production to woolens. Ashland could be reached, at that time, by way of the Boston & Lowell Railroad.
Visitors to the popular vacation community could arrive in town and be transported upriver on a steamboat to the many luxurious resort hotels that graced the banks of the lake. In 1880, Ashland’s population reached 969.
