Description

View of Lancaster, Coos County, N.H., 1883 / drawn & published by A. F. Poole.

This bird’s-eye view print of Lancaster, New Hampshire was drawn and published by A. F. Poole, Beck & Pauli Lith. in 1883. Lancaster was settled in the 1700's near the Connecticut River. Timber was harvested aggressively in the early years and cultivated clearings were turned into successful farmlands.

Lancaster village was located about a mile from the Connecticut on the Israel River. The fast-moving waters of the Israel enabled mills and manufactories to be built along it during the early 1800's.

Lancaster is situated with towering mountains on all sides, and lovely ponds here and there. A branch of the Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad extended to Lancaster in the Mid-1800's. The railway made it possible for local farmers to easily transport products to outside markets and began the town’s tourism industry. A number of grand luxurious resort hotels emerged in the late 1800's, making it a desirable resort area for vacationing New Englanders.

The map includes labeled peaks, roads, buildings, bridges, waterways and railroad route.
