This illustrated print of Elgin, Illinois was drawn by A. B. Upham and published by Shober & Carqueville in 1880. Elgin was established in the early 1800's along the banks of the Fox River, when it was decided that the location would make an excellent point at which to build a bridge.
The eventual river crossing afforded convenient passage and the area began to attract manufacturers. Elgin’s main manufacturer in the 1880's was the Elgin National Watch Company which maintained a large factory near the Chicago & North-Western Railroad line, which passed through town. The watch manufacturer was known worldwide for making pocket-watches.
Elgin was also home to the fine classically educating Elgin Academy and the Northern Illinois State Mental Hospital.
The image published in 1880 includes labeled streets, buildings, bridges and railroad route. It features inset illustrations of the Elgin National Watch Works and Insane Asylum.
