View of the city of Tacoma, W.T., Puget-Sound, county seat of
Pierce Cty. 1884. H. Wellge, del. Beck & Pauli, litho.
The city of Tacoma, Washington was founded on the shores of the Puget Sound in
1864, and was incorporated as a city in 1874. The city was selected as a
the western terminus for the Northern Pacific Railroad, though the depot was
built two miles south of the city in "New Tacoma". The two cities merged
together, and Tacoma saw rapid population growth. It is now the third
largest city in the state of Washington.
This beautiful map provides a look at the beginnings of the city.
