This panoramic print of Danville, Illinois was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Chicago Lith. Co. in 1869. Danville, founded in the 1820's, formally entered its coal mining era in the 1860's.

Early open drift mines were established along the river banks wherever coal veins were discovered. Important mines of Danville were operated by Caruthers & Ball, Chandler & Donlan and William Kirkland. The mines operated open-pit removal systems for decades, eventually stripping away most of the river’s bluffs.

The map looking northwest includes labeled streets, buildings, bridges and railroad route.
