Description

Delhi, N.Y. 1887. Drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh. Burleigh Litho. Establishment.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Delhi, New York, published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1887. Delhi, a picturesque town in the Catskill Mountains, was a popular summer resort village during the early 1800's, bringing many visitors to the Elk Creek area. Its refreshing mineral springs were neatly located near hills and valleys filled with grazing cattle. The community was known for the fine quality of its butter. In 1824, the Delaware Woolen Factory was established in Delhi and would be later owned by Smith & Penfield, whose woolen and flour mills are both noted on the map. George Sherwood built his grist mill here in 1826. Following the American Civil War, efforts were made along Elk Creek to mine for salt, and potash was produced.

This panoramic map from 1887 includes buildings and clearly labeled street names.
