Description

West Chazy, N.Y. / drawn & pub. by C. Fausel ; L.R. Burleigh Lith.

This bird's-eye view map of West Chazy, New York was drawn by Christian Fausel and published by L. R. Burleigh in 1899. West Chazy is a hamlet in northeastern Clinton County founded in the mid-1700's by Jean Laframboise. The Little Chazy River flows through the village. Laframboise introduced apple growing to the area and the countryside quickly became dotted with apple orchards. McIntosh apples were first propagated in Chazy in the early 1800's from a planting of John McIntosh. By 1899 there were at least two blocks of thirty to fifty McIntosh trees in Clinton County.

This panoramic map from 1899 shows buildings, railroad routes and clearly labeled streets.
