Description

View of Meyersdale, Somerset County, P.A., 1900 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic print of Meyersdale, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1900. Meyersdale was founded in the late 1700's near the confluence of Flaugherty Creek and the Casselman River.

The community maintained as a center for agriculture and timber in its early years. In the 1870's the railroad arrived, bringing many new industries and businesses. George J. Black established a pottery in 1873, producing stoneware and sewer pipes. Also that year J. H. and H. I. Friedline founded a large planning mill in town. In 1875, the Elk Lick Coal Company was formed at nearby Summit Township. Meyersdale added a grand opera house in 1883 built by William Slicer and Alexander Glofelty.

Meyersdale’s location near the Pennsylvania coal fields enabled much growth during the late 1800's with transportation and industry. Meyersdale’s population in 1900 was just over 3,000.

The map from 1900 indicates buildings, clearly labeled streets and railroad route.
