Description

View of Monaca, Beaver County, P.A., 1900 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic print of Monaca, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1900. Monaca was formed along the Ohio River as a boat building community called Phillipsburg. The land was sold to the Harmonist Society in 1832. They continued cultivating the land for a period. Phillipsburg was incorporated in 1840. The Watercure Sanatorium was established in 1848 as a health spa to cure ailments using hydrotherapy. The spa resort was a huge success and when in 1856 a post office was added, Phillipsburg was called Water Cure. The town prospered with the manufacture of glass, porcelain, tile and wire products. Its name was officially changed to Monaca in 1892 to honor Oneida Indian nation leader Monacatootha.

The map from 1900 shows the bridge across the Ohio River toward Rochester. It includes buildings, labeled streets and railroad route.
