Description

View of Pen Argyl, Northampton County, P.A., 1916/ published by Hughes & Bailey.

This aero-view print of Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by Hughes & Bailey in 1916. Pen Argyl was established in the Lehigh Valley by workers of the state owned quarries in the area. Incorporated in 1882, Pen Argyl is located in the township of Plainfield. In 1916 the community was served by the Slate-Belt trolley system. The Salvation Army established a barracks in Pen Argyl in 1891. The Faith Reformed fellowship organized in Pen Argyl in the early 1900's and erected their church at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Heller St. in 1903. Pen Argyl grew as a result of the many slate quarries in the area and the many Welsh laborers that worked them.

Pen Argyl’s town booster of 1916 states:
