Historic Map - Coldwater, MI - 1868
Description
View of Coldwater, Branch County, M.I., 1868 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.
This bird’s-eye view print of Coldwater, Michigan was drawn and published by Albert Ruger, Chicago Lith. around 1868. Coldwater was organized as the county seat of the newly established Branch County in the 1830's. Its position between the Coldwater and Sauk rivers, in the Coldwater Lakes region of Michigan, had been a stop along the earlier Chicago Indian trail.
The early settlers of the area grew grain and raised livestock. Pig-iron began to be manufactured here in 1847. The addition of the Michigan Southern Railroad, in 1850, enhanced Coldwater’s business interests and greatly reduced farmer's produce transportation costs.
The manufacture of agricultural implements, sleds and woolens became major industries in the late 1800's. Coldwater maintained numerous grain mills. Coldwater incorporated as a city in 1861.
The map includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route.
