Germany at once violated the neutrality of Luxembourg on Aug. 2 and of Belgium on Aug 4 ~ 1914. England declared war on Germany that same day.
On Aug 5 Austria Hungary declared war on Russia and Montenegro declared war on Austria. England declared war on Austria war Aug 12 ~ 1914.

Aug. 23 Japan declared war on Germany and in November 1914 Turkey joined Germany and Austria. In 1915 Italy declared war on Austria on May 23 and Bulgaria declared war on Serbia on Oct. 13.
In 1916 Portugal joined the allies in March and Roumania on August 27.

In Feb. 1915 Germany told the United States to keep her shipping out of all war zones. The United States refused to obey such a demand and severed diplomatic relations early in 1917.
Finally the United States declared war on the Imperial German Government April 6.

Besides the United States, Siam, Greece, China, Brazil and Cuba declared war in 1917. The United States government faced a great task and set immediately to work. General John. J. Pershing landed in France June 13 ~ 1917. He recommended an army of 3,000,000 under American command.

The Americans were given the Lorraine front so that they could concentrate on the coal and iron mines near Metz and make use of the less crowded ports south of Le Havre. In the spring of 1918 the German drives necessitated the use of United States troops as units with the allies under Command of Gen. Foch.

Thrown in with the British and French the Americans took an active part in the fighting at Cantigny ~ Chateau ~ Thierry ~ Belleau Wood ~ Soissons~ Jaulgonne and Fismes. This
turned the tide and in August 1918 the assembling of the real American Army was begun near St. Mihiel.

The Americans took part in the Oise Aisne offensive and on Sept. 12 the American army itself undertook the reduction of the St. Mihiel salient. This netted 16,000 prisoners, over 400 cannon and over 200 square miles of territory. The first army then began the Meuse Argonne battle.

Foch then applies Allied pressure all along the line and with the Germans in wide spread retreat they were forced to apply for the Armistice of Nov. 11 1918. On December 13 the 3rd American Army crossed the Rhine and occupied a bridgehead at Coblenz, Germany.

Immediately after the Armistice General Pershing began to move his forces home.
Shipments began Dec. 1918 and continued rapidly leave areas were thrown open and an immense school system organized in the A.E.F.
Horse shows and athletic games were organized everywhere.

The Army of Occupation was relieved as fast as possible and the American flag on the Rhine was lowered on January 24 ~ 1923 when the area was turned over to the French control. The A&F was official mustered on Aug 31 ~ 1920. Approximate total cost of the was, $190,000,000,000.

Greatest number of men overseas at one time, 2,057,907.
Normal strength of a division was 28,103. Oct ~ 1918, 29 American divisions were in action.
