Description
Lloyd's Railroad, Telegraph and Express Map of the United States and Canada from official information. In 1867 the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million in a deal that most called "Seward's Folly". The Dominican of Canada was created as a independent domain of the British Empire in that same year.
Samuel Morse (1791-1872) developed a single wire telegraph system in 1837 which signaled over long distances when operators engaged electrical current using a single key. Morse’s economical system was adopted quickly by railroad companies and other businesses.
This relief map of the eastern United States and Canada was published in 1867 by James T. Lloyd. It shows cities, towns, forts and fortification, waterways, express companies, railroads, steamboat lines and magnetic telegraph lines.
This is an incomplete map, as the left portion of the United States from the Missouri River west is missing.
Inset maps include Riviere du Loup Branch, or Northern Terminus of Grand Trunk Railroad, Railroads in Texas, Eastern U.S. states, Boston vicinity, Philadelphia vicinity.
Also provided are endorsements of the mapmaker by military officials.
