Henry Flagler is credited with bringing the railways into southern Florida in the late 1800's from St. Augustine southward. His railroad enabled towns like Daytona Beach, Palm Beach, and Miami Beach to prosper and grow.
He successfully turned his Florida East Coast Railway into the Overseas Railroad by continuing to build southward all the way to Key West using a series of viaducts. From Key West passengers and freight could be easily loaded onto ferries for the short ride to Havana, Cuba. On January 22, 1912, Flagler himself rode into Key West on the newly completed line to much fanfare; finally achieving his goal of over 30 years.
In November of 1912, Governor of New Jersey Woodrow Wilson was elected president of the United States.
