Reproduction map of the community known as Columbia, MO, drawn by Albert Ruger. Columbia lies among small tributary valleys of the Missouri River. This college town, the county seat of Boone County was originally settled by Mississippian mound-builders before settlers moved in and established Smithton, which was swiftly re-named Columbia, a poetic name for the United States. The founding in 1839 of the University of Missouri instilled growth and, as the map shows, is clearly the showcase of town.

The map features clearly labeled street names with lively scenes of railroad, carriage and pedestrian traffic.
