Description

Bird's eye view of the city of Peru, Miami Co., Indiana 1868.

Reproduction map of Peru, Indiana, published 1868. Incorporated as a city in 1834, Peru enjoyed the use of the Wabash & Erie Canals until they were finally phased out in 1857. By then, the arrival of the railroad connecting Indianapolis with Peru was completed (spring of 1854). Peru was well prepared, having built machine shops and a roundhouse in the fall of 1853.

This map captures the town as it appeared just one year following the completion of the "Pan Handle" Line, which was an extension of the Pennsylvania Lines west of Pittsburgh, PA, in 1867.
