Fishermen settled in the area along the Damariscotta River, now known as Newcastle, as early as the 1630's. Land was purchased from the Algonquin tribe by John Mason in 1649-50. Then known as Sheepscot Plantation, the territory was claimed by the Duke of York in 1665. It was destroyed in 1676 during a conflict between Native Americans and the English, known as King Philip’s War, considered the greatest calamity to fall upon the Puritans in the 17th Century, with nearly half of the towns destroyed and many killed. The Native American leader, Metacomet was called “King Philip” by the British. While the conflict elsewhere in New England ended with King Philip’s death at the hands of Puritan rangers, fighting in Maine continued until the signing of a treaty at Casco Bay in April 1678.
The “Twin Villages” of Newcastle and Damariscotta are featured on this J. J. Stoner panoramic map. Today the Sheepscot Historic District in Newcastle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
