Description

Carthage, N.Y. 1888. Drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh. Burleigh Lith. Est.

Reproduction panorama map of Carthage, New York, drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1888. Carthage sits northwest of the Adirondack Mountains along the Black River. The village was rebuilt three times before the publishing of this map, as it was plagued with numerous fires; the last of which, in 1884, spread to West Carthage and destroyed over 150 buildings. This map captures the town as it appeared just four years after that fire and we can see extensive rebuilding efforts with foundries, mills and factories running at full steam.

This map from 1888 includes clearly labeled street names and shows railroad routes.
