Description

Oxford, N.Y. Drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh. Burleigh Litho. Establishment.

This reproduction bird's-eye view of Oxford, New York was drawn by Lucien R. Burleigh around 1888. Oxford is a town in Chenango County along the banks of the Chenango River that was settled in the late 1700s. The Oxford Academy was chartered in 1794. The town prospered with the Chenango Canal, opening in 1837 and railroad service commencing later. The canal was instrumental in the transportation of the large bluestone slabs that were quarried from the hills around town and transported east to be cut. The bluestone needed to be brought down to the canal, and later to the railroad, using large wagons pulled by several horses. The blocks of stone were so immense that they were measured, not by weight, but by "horse power". Oxford's F. G. Clark Co. was one of the most prolific quarries of the "Bluestone Belt" which ran through the west bank of the Hudson River in the area. The F. G. Clark & Son's Blue Stone Quarry and Stone Sawing Mill are both indexed on the map.

This panoramic view map of Oxford from the late 1800's shows labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes.
