Description

Corning, N.Y., 1882 : junction of the New York, Lake Erie, and Western and the Syracuse, Geneva & Corning R.R.'s / C.J. Corbin, field manager.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Corning, New York, published by Philadelphia Publishing House in 1882. Corning began as a lumber town on the Chemung River in Steuben County in the late 1700's and was called "Town of Painted Post". By the mid-1800's, the river's mills were powered by the swift currents of the river. The lumber resource was declining and Corning, as it was now called after Albany investor Erastus Corning, turned its attention to other interests. In 1851, Amory Houghton Jr. established his Corning Glass Works in Corning. Now known as Corning Incorporated, the glassmakers produced glass and ceramic products. With several glass factories, Corning now was referred to as "Crystal City". Just across the river from Corning is Gibson, which in the mid-1800's contained a feeder canal for the Chemung Canal system. Materials such as soft coal, tobacco, grain and whiskey were transported from Corning on barges using this system, and during the Civil War the community experienced a boom in transportation of merchandise. During the 1880's, Corning was a railroad town with several small railroad lines using it as a connecting junction.
