Description

Greenwich, N.Y. / published & drawn by L.R. Burleigh.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Greenwich, New York, drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh around 1885. In the late 1700's, when Quaker Job Whipple rode west from Rhode Island to relocate his family, he came across this area along the Batten Kill creek and found it to be desirable. He moved his family here and completed a dam crossing the creek that had been started by the previous owner. Others settled in and the established village referred to itself as "Whipple City". Mr. Whipple built another dam across the Kill and erected a sawmill, a gristmill, and a cottonmill, all of which he ran with his three sons. Batten Kill was a major power source for these early settlers and attracted many others to the area. Whipple City was incorporated in 1809, and its name was changed to Greenwich in 1867.

The map from the 1880's shows railway line, buildings and clearly labeled street names.
