Description

Middletown, N.Y. 1887. Drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Middletown, New York, drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1887. In 1887, Middletown was a village in eastern Orange County, New York, settled in the late 1700's in the foothills of the Shawangunk Mountains along the Walkill River. With the arrival of the Erie Railroad and New York, Ontario and Western Railway, the village attracted several industries to the area including tool manufacturers and glass makers. Middletown would officially become a city in the year after this map's publishing. Today Middletown is almost entirely bordered by the township of Walkill.

This panoramic map from 1887 shows railroad route, buildings and clearly labeled street names.
