Description

The city of New York.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of New York City was drawn and published by Currier & Ives in 1884. It provides a colorful look at New York one year after the New York and Brooklyn Bridge was opened to traffic. The "New York Gothams" were a brand new baseball team for the city. A few years later, the team's manager Jim Mutrie began referring to the team as his "Giants", and the name was soon adopted.

This map was published the same year that "The Dakota", a new 85 unit apartment building, opened on 1 West 73rd Street on Central Park West.

This splendidly colored panoramic map from 1884 shows buildings, streets, railways and shipping traffic.
