Historic Map - New York City, NY - 1879
Description
This reproduction overhead view map of New York was drawn by J. W. Williams and published by Root & Tinker for Rogers, Peet & Co. in 1879. It provides a colorful look at New York and vicinity four years before the Brooklyn Bridge was completed. Transportation in the city was good in 1879, with nearly all the elevated roads starting in the vicinity of the Battery and having frequent stops. The fare at the time was 10 cents, except between certain hours, both morning and evening, when it was five cents. Rogers, Peet & Co. was a large wholesale and retail men's and boys clothier located at 569-575 Broadway, opposite the Metropolitan Hotel.
The map was scanned by the Library of Congress and is slightly askew on the print. This beautifully colored bird's-eye view map from 1879 notes the location of Rogers, Peet & Co. Shown are streets, buildings, and shipping traffic.
