Description

The city of New York.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of the City of New York was drawn by Parsons & Atwater and published by Currier & Ives in 1889. It provides a look at New York and vicinity in the year that Nelly Bly (Elizabeth Jane Cochran) began her famous journey around the world that began at the Hoboken Pier. Upon her return in seventy-two days, six hours, eleven minutes and fourteen seconds, she was greeted with a fireworks display, parades and brass bands. Nelly Bly would later write about her round-the-world quest before traveling to Europe and writing her observations of World War 1.

The first copies of the "Wall Street Journal" were published the same year as this map, 1889. Selling for 2 cents per copy, the four page publication consisted of railroad and crop conditions, and the leading stock prices of the Dow index.

This detailed panoramic map from 1889 notes steamers Connecticut and Puritan. It shows buildings, streets, and shipping traffic.
