Description

Bird's eye view of the city of Akron, Summit County, Ohio 1870. Drawn by A. Ruger. Chicago Lithographing Co.

Bird's-eye view reproduction map of Akron, Ohio looking southeast, drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Ruger & Stoner in 1870. Akron began as a small village in 1825. Its name comes from a Greek word meaning "Summit". Its location along the Ohio and Erie Canal helped Akron grow throughout the 1800s. The canal, constructed in the 1820s connected Akron with the Cuyahoga River near Lake Erie and Cleveland. The canal transported freight traffic between 1827 to 1861 when railroads took over. The canal was then used as a water source for towns and industries. Coal and the growth of manufacturing during the Civil War increased the population of Akron from 3,500 in 1860 to 10,000 in 1870. One of Akron's major industries of the era was the production of "Quaker Oats" which fed Union soldiers during the war.

The map features clearly labeled street names with lively scenes of railroad, carriage and pedestrian traffic.

It features inset illustrations of Buckeye Mower & Reaper Works, Carver's Academy of Music, Akron Knife Works, Baldwin's Masonic Temple & Post Office and Excelsior Mower & Reaper Works. Complete reference list below.
