Description

Panoramic map of Bennington, Vermont, published in 1887.

Established in 1749, Bennington was originally named for Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire, who first chartered the city. Bennington's history is forever linked to the success of the American Revolution when the "Green Mountain Boys", a local citizens militia group led by Ethan Allen, were part of the pivotal "Battle of Bennington", held on August 16, 1777, that was soon followed by the British surrender. The battle was considered to be a "turning point in the Revolution". Both the Bennington Battle Monument and Battle Ground are indexed on the map.

Natural resources and water power led to the development of mills from the time of settlement. Following the American Civil War, the textile industry reached its height in Bennington. Pottery, lumber, and iron works were also rapidly developing industries in Bennington after the war.

Mills and factories gradually left town as larger cities offered more opportunities for businesses and workers and the region experienced a decline. Tourism and newly diversified industries eventually replaced the mills as the economy of Bennington kept pace with change.
