Panoramic view map of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, published by T. M. Fowler in 1871, reprint. Destroyed by fire on October 8, 1871, this map captures the town of Peshtigo as it appeared just one month before the devastating fire. The factories and buildings indexed on the map were destroyed. Conditions and circumstances in the fall of 1871 converged to create a "perfect storm" for an outbreak of fires throughout the Upper Midwest. "Slash and Burn" methods of clearing land for farming; logging practices that left piles of dry tinder in clearings; sawmills and factories producing sawdust, bark and wood waste; brush left along the clearings for rail lines and the sparks from steam engines; and nearly all-wood construction of buildings and sidewalks in the villages and towns had presented new conditions in the region that, when combined with a prolonged draught resulted in tinder-box conditions, where fire could erupt at any time. On October 8, 1871, when the fire broke out in Peshtigo, cyclone force winds arrived and created an inferno.
