Description

View of East Boston, Suffolk County, M.A., 1879 / drawn & published by O. H. Bailey & Co.

This panoramic print of East Boston, Massachusetts was drawn and published by O. H. Bailey & Co. in 1879. East Boston was annexed by Boston in 1636. By the 1870's, Boston had become one of America’s largest trading and industrial centers. An influx of immigrants from Europe and elsewhere prompted the Boston area to begin a campaign of enlargement. Waterways and ravines were filled in and hills leveled in the effort to accommodate future growth.

A fire in November of 1872 destroyed much of Boston’s financial district just across the harbor from East Boston.

In 1879, Boston residents were gearing up for the 250th anniversary celebration of their fine city. This map shows the newly established foundation that would later become Logan International Airport.

The map indicates labeled streets, buildings, wharves and railroad route. Featured are inset illustrations of Boston Dyewood & Chemical Co. and Cunard Steamship Co.
