Historic Map - Watertown, MA - 1879
Description
This bird’s-eye view print of Watertown, Massachusetts was drawn and published by O. H. Bailey & Co. in 1879. Watertown was settled west of Boston in the 1630's as Saltonstall Plantation.
A farming community in its early years, Watertown began its industrial age at that time establishing that first grist mill in the Massachusetts Colony. A woolen mill was added in 1662.
In the 1800's, Watertown could be easily reached by way of the Fitchburg Railway. At that time, the Hollingsworth & Whitney Paper Company was a large employer of Watertown.
The illustration includes labeled roads, buildings and railroad routes. Featured are images of Leonard Whitney’s residence and the Hollingsworth & Whitney Paper Mills.
