This bird’s-eye view print of
Red Wing, Minnesota was drawn and published by Schober & Carqueville
Lith. Co. in 1880. Red Wing was established along the Mississippi River
in the 1850's. Red Wing maintained as an agricultural community with
wheat being the main crop grown.
A railroad connection with
Mankato was completed in 1871. By the mid-1870's, Red Wing had become a
major transportation and trading center for Minnesota’s grain market.
Mills and warehouses dotted Red Wing’s landscape as shipments of grain,
brought in from neighboring towns, awaited river or rail transport.
Other important industries that emerged in Red Wing along with
timber and furniture making, and tanning and footwear making, included
the harvesting of clay, lime and building stone
