Description

View of Red Wing, Goodhue County, M.N., 1880 / drawn & published by Shober & Carqueville.

This bird’s-eye view print of Red Wing, Minnesota was drawn and published by Schober & Carqueville Lith. Co. in 1880. Red Wing was established along the Mississippi River in the 1850's. Red Wing maintained as an agricultural community with wheat being the main crop grown.

A railroad connection with Mankato was completed in 1871. By the mid-1870's, Red Wing had become a major transportation and trading center for Minnesota’s grain market. Mills and warehouses dotted Red Wing’s landscape as shipments of grain, brought in from neighboring towns, awaited river or rail transport.

Other important industries that emerged in Red Wing along with timber and furniture making, and tanning and footwear making, included the harvesting of clay, lime and building stone

The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route. Riverboat activity is displayed in the background.
