Description

View of Bethlehem and South Bethlehem, Lehigh and Northampton Counties, P.A., 1877 / published by Schwartz & Weaver.

This reproduction panoramic view of Bethlehem and South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania looking northeast along the Lehigh River, was drawn by G. A. Rudd and published by Schwartz & Weaver in 1877. Bethlehem was established in the mid-1700's in the fertile Lehigh River Valley. The Moravian Church owned and controlled much of the land and only allowed non-members of the faith to lease property in the 1850's. The Bethlehem Rolling Mill and Iron Company organized in the late 1850's and constructed a large factory in South Bethlehem. In 1861 the company changed its name to Bethlehem Iron Company and erected their first blast furnace and roller mill. Later they added another blast furnace and a machine shop. The changes this company made to the landscape of South Bethlehem erased an existing community resort spring forever and altered the beloved scenery of the area. The iron firm gathered momentum with the country’s building of railroads, as they produced much of the rail used. This company would later be known as Bethlehem Steel, manufacturing railroad rails and armor plating for the U. S. Navy.

The image from 1877 portrays Bethlehem’s bridges, streets and buildings.
