This panoramic print of
Sharon, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published
by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1901. Sharon was established in the
late 1700's. Grist and saw mills began to appear early in the 1800's and
Sharon was laid out on the west side of the Shenango River in 1815 by
land owner William Budd.
Lumbering and distilling were important
early interests of Sharon. Incorporated as a borough in 1841, Sharon
prospered greatly with the discovery of coal in Pennsylvania as furnaces
emerged throughout the region for manufacture of pig iron.
In
the latter half of the 1800's attention turned toward the making of
steel. Furniture making and flouring mills were valued interests during
the 1800's, while the iron and steel industry dominated Sharon’s economy.
The map shows Sharon’s labeled streets, buildings, bridges and
railroad lines.
