Description

View of Franklin, Venango County, P.A., 1901 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic print of Franklin, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1901. Franklin was established at the confluence of French Creek and the Allegheny River and became county seat of Venango County when it was formed in 1800. Franklin was an early manufacturing town especially with the production of pig iron and the building of boats.

The discovery of oil and petroleum in the 1860's led many manufacturers and traders to settle in Franklin and the city was incorporated in 1868. Machine shops emerged to supply and outfit wells of all sorts. Franklin began being served by the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad in 1863 and the Jamestown and Franklin and the Allegheny Railroads in 1867. The Franklin Telephone Exchange was organized in 1881. The city Hall Building was erected in 1883. That same year Franklin began work on a pipe line that would carry oil from the wells to refineries built in town.

The detailed map from 1901 includes labeled streets, buildings, bridges and railroad lines. It features an inset illustration of "View of the City of Franklin, PA.".
