Description

View of North Adams, Berkshire County, M.A., 1881 / drawn & published by H. H. Rowley & Co.

This bird’s-eye view print of North Adams, Massachusetts was drawn and published by H. H. Rowley & Co. in 1881. Adams and North Adams were settled in the 1700's in the valleys surrounding the Hoosick River and its tributaries. Adams was named in honor of American statesman Samuel Adams and prospered as a farming community in its early years. Textile and paper mills began to appear in Adams in the early 1800's utilizing the river’s power.

The decades long building of the 4.75 mile-long Hoosac Tunnel near North Adams spurred much growth in the area. The train tunnel, known as the Great Bore, through the Hoosac Mountain Range was completed in 1875. North Adams split from Adams in 1878, leaving the separate towns to prosper independently. North Adams’ economy was centered on its textile mills and shoe manufactories in the 1880's.

The colorful illustration includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad routes. There are detailed illustrations of the following:
