Fort Plain, N.Y. and Nelliston. Burleigh Lithographing Establishment. Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Fort Plain and Nelliston, New York, drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh around 1891. This village along a branch of the Mohawk River in Montgomery County was named after a Revolutionary War fort built just up the hill. The fort and its blockhouse held strong throughout the war due to the fort's women who, dressed as men, were able to fend off Indian attacks. When the Erie Canal was completed Fort Plain quickly became a center for textile and furniture manufacturing.
This map shows buildings, clearly labeled street names and railway routes.
