Massillon was named in honor of French court bishop Jean Baptiste Massillon by "The Friendly Association for Mutual Interests" in the early 1800s as a utopian society along the Tuscarawas River. With the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal, Massillon found itself between the banks of both the river and canal. It prospered greatly as a shipping port for wheat and grain. The streets of Massillon would be crowded with immense wagons of wheat, waiting to be unloaded onto barges. Industry began to take shape and Massillon became a leading maker of farm equipment and machinery. In 1845, a thrashing machine called "The Boss", built by the Russell Brothers of Massillon, won first prize at the Ohio State Fair. Their factory on Erie Street became a huge employer for the area. With the arrival of the railroad in 1852, Massillon became home to industries such as pig iron production, glassmaking and coal mining. Joseph Davenport founded the Massillon Bridge Company in Massillon where he invented and produced locomotives that included cabs and "cowcatchers".
