Historic Railroad Map of the Southwestern United States - 1859

General Map of the United States and their territory between the Mississippi and the Pacific Ocean.

In the years following California’s annexation, numerous surveys of the west were performed in order to find the best transcontinental railroad route.

This map published in 1859 shows the different surveyed routes from the Mississippi Valley to the Pacific Coast. It indicates the recently discovered gold, silver and copper regions, as well as newly established and proposed post routes. Unexplored territories and American Indian tribal regions are noted. Cities, towns, forts, and waterways are shown. Mountains are indicated using hachures. Finished and proposed railroads are clearly labeled.
