Historic Railroad Map of the Western United States - 1859

Map of the United States West of the Mississippi showing the routes to Pike's Peak Overland Mail Route to California.

In the years following California’s annexation, numerous surveys of the west were performed in order to find the best transcontinental railroad route.

This general relief map of the United States west of the Mississippi River was published in 1859 by Leopold Gast & Bro. It displays the transportation and communication networks of the American West before the civil war, in times of much western emigration. Shown are cities and towns, mountains and waterways, railroad surveys, mail routes, and forts. Unexplored territories and American Indian tribal regions are noted.
