Historic Map - San José, CA - 1869

Bird's eye view of the city of San José, Cal. Designed and lithographed by W. Vallance Gray & C.B. Gifford. L. Nagel, print.

The city of San José was the first capital of California, and was incorporated as a city in 1850. It later grew to be the third largest city in California.

San José is situated between the San Andreas and Calaveras faults and is considered highly prone to earthquakes. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 damaged several San José structures.

This beautiful map provides a look back to the early beginnings of the city, long before it became known as "Silicon Valley."
